Other Potential Coyotes Suitors Revealed
While there are only two, or maybe three, bidders to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes during the Sept. 10 auction, a story in today’s edition of The Globe and Mail reveals a number of other suitors who examined buying the team prior to the bankruptcy filing.
In a U.S. court filing, Earl Scudder, a Phoenix lawyer who represents Coyotes majority owner Jerry Moyes stated that Elisa Aquilini, the mother of the family who owns the Vancouver Canucks, wanted to buy the Coyotes for her husband. She saw how the success her children had in owning the Canucks and wanted to see her husband own a team as well.
The Globe reported that Scudder said in the filing that the NHL would not have approved Elisa owning a stake in two clubs, so the couple discussed putting the Coyotes ownership into the hands of another family member. In the end, no offer was made.
Other potential owners included movie mogul Jerry Bruckheimer, who backed out at the $200-million (all currency U.S.) asking price for the Coyotes; oil tycoon Max Chambers, who Scudder said was more interested in buying an NFL team; the Maloof family, which owns the Sacramento Kings of the NBA; and former Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillett, who offered to help find a Canadian buyer for the Coyotes.
Despite all the interest, today we await a ruling by Bankruptcy Judge Redfield Baum who is holding a hearing to determine if Jim Balsillie will be allowed to participate in the Sept. 10 auction. The NHL is expected to argue that Balsillie should not be allowed to participate in the auction because the league’s Board of Governors already unanimously rejected him as a potential owner.
More court proceedings are expected no matter what Baum rules. If Balsillie wins, the NHL is going to appeal the decision. If Balsillie is denied, then he may pursue antitrust issues for what he views as unjust denial of NHL franchise ownership.
Meanwhile, Ice Edge Holdings is aggressively moving forward as that group has submitted a $150 million bid, booked five dates for neutral-site games in Saskatoon and has come to an agreement with the Coyotes largest creditor.
The hearing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. today. Balsillie will make his first appearance in the bankruptcy court. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and NHL spokesman Frank Brown are among the league representatives in attendance.
