Leinart Named Sporting News College Football Player of the Decade

If you heard that a certain two-time NCAA national champion and Heisman Trophy winner was named The Sporting News College Football Player if the Decade, you would likely think Tim Tebow. You would be wrong.
Matt Leinart received the honor on Thursday in recognition of his tremendous collegiate career at USC which saw him go 37-2 a starter and one Vince Young-drive away from a national title three-peat.
Leinart-Tebow Head to Head
Leinart: 37-2 record, 10,679 total yards, 109 total TDs, one Heisman, two national titles
Tebow: 25-5 record, 9,115 total yards, 118 total TDs, one Heisman, two national titles*

Leinart shared his favorite memory with Sporting News:
“It was probably the end of the Notre Dame game, my senior year. We got into a situation where it’s fourth-and-9, against all odds, our backs against the wall. And Dwayne Jarrett turns a slant-and-go into (61) yards. The thing was, we didn’t panic. We just executed a play. And then the Bush Push, or whatever they call it, I had to decide whether to spike the ball or go for a touchdown. I told Reggie, ‘I’m going to go.’ He said, OK. I’ve got you.’ I remember, after the game, being so emotionally drained. Everything that went into that game and getting the rivalry back in the spotlight. That last drive felt like it took years off your life. But I’ll never forget celebrating in the locker room after we won.”
